Elaine Thomas
From molecular structures to knitted forms.
Molecular Biologist / Textile artist
Elaine Thomas is a formally trained molecular biologist who, after hours, is a textile artist, maker, and founder of knitwear label Tricote.
Thomas’ practice aims to subvert the traditional functionality of knitted fabric, with a particular interest in exploring its parallels with computational and scientific concepts. Initially introduced to knitting by her maternal family members, Thomas has developed her craft autodidactically to span hand knitting, domestic machine knitting and embroidery techniques. Thomas’ work primarily focuses contemporary knitwear design, with her pieces featuring in a variety of editorial photography projects.
